On the River Evenlode, lies our pretty, tranquil village
of Ascott-under-Wychwood, near Burford. With a population of 420, Ascott is
a pleasant composition of stone houses and cottages of various dates. The
modern village was originally two settlements, Ascott d'Oyley after the family
of Wido de Oileio who accompanied William the Conqueror, and to the west Ascott
Earl, possibly from the Earls of Gloucester who held part of Ascott. Remains
of a motte and bailey castle can be seen in each and in the grounds of Meadowbank
House.
From Meadowbank House, you can enjoy a lovely 2.5 mile circular walk, through the church yard, past the village green and school, through Ascott d'Oyley to the river, passing the old mill, crossing by a footbridge, returning along the north bank to the road, past Swan Pub and back again to Meadowbank House. Or extend this walk to 3.5 miles to Pudlicote House and Chilson.
In 1873 the Ascott martyrs, local women, were briefly imprisoned for protesting against agricultural strike-breakers on Crown Farm. The bench around the chestnut tree on the village green is a memorial to these brave women. The late 12th century church of Holy Trinity is set in the large churchyard with an avenue of lime trees. Details of highly recommendable, nearby, traditional pubs and restaurants are available in information folders in the rooms, as well as on our 'Places To Eat' page. We, in Ascott-under-Wychwood, are very lucky to have
a wonderful community-run Village Shop. Awarded Oxfordshire Village
Community Shop of the Year 2007 and Best Village Shop in Southern
England 2007, it is certainly worth a visit! Pick up freshly made sandwiches
and cakes and drinks for your picnic, or a bottle of wine for your evening
drink on your patio!
